Food malnourished horses?
I work at a privately run small equine rescue and we recently acquired three emaciated horses desperately through the MSPCA. They are all high horses (one is 32yrs old!) And are stable and slowly recovering. I was wondering if anyone had advice and experience in the treatment of these cases (additions diet, exercise, etc.) that could help the recovery process speed-up/ease. More food is not the answer even though these horses are old (too old to walk) still do not want to risk overeating and causing them to founder, painfully. thanks
Like everyone else said, a visit to the vet would be a good idea. Cool Builder calories and weight are very good products to add weight to any horse. The Probiotics are also a good addition, I found that seem to help a lot of horses get more out of their food. A daily dewormer such as Strongid C is also a good idea, especially since it was rescued. Obviously, checking the teeth and if no dental problems can be solved immediately (a lot of veterans who do not sedate a horse in poor condition until it louder) put the horse on a crash diet precipitate ball.
